Type Locality and Naming

Central Henan-Hubei border region. The Hongling Fm was named by Ma Xingyuan et al. in 1975. The typical section is situated in Hongling of Foguangyu, Yanshi County, Henan Province.

Synonym: (红岭组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Hongling Fm is subdivided into three parts. Lower part consists of grayish yellow carbonaceous shale and purple red shale intercalated with siltstone, bearing basal carbonaceous quartzose sandstone and thick-bedded feldspathic siltstone. Middle part is a dolomitic limestone with siliceous lumps. Upper part is composed of gray, purple red dolomitic limestone. The Hongling Formation of a thickness more than 100 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base of the formation in the type section has a fault contact to the underlying Heyao Fm

Upper contact

The top with gray thick-bedded dolomite disconformably underlies the Lower Cambrian Xinji Fm

Regional extent

Central Henan-Hubei border region. It is restricted around Mayao and Baiyugou east of Foguangyu in Yanshi County, with an area of only several km2.

Fossils

The dolomite was found to yield stromatolites Inzeria f., Jurusania f., J. cyindrica, J. alicica, Jacutophyton f.; and the carbonaceous shale yields abundant microplants: Leiopsophosphaera sp., Laminarites sp., Stictosphaeridium sp., Synsphaeridium conglutinatum, Trachysphaeridium sp., Taeniatum simplex, Psuedozonosphaera nucleolata and Polysphaeroides cf. contertus.
